Exact existing formula

How the score is calculated

Score = source-reported yield × (grade points ÷ 12) − decay penalty. Grade points are A+ 12, A 11, A− 10, B+ 9, B 8, B− 7, C+ 6, C 5, C− 4, D+ or D 3, and F 0. The decay penalty is 4 when flagged and 0 otherwise. Higher scores sort first.

Computed example

SCHD’s displayed inputs

SCHD’s displayed 3.00% yield, A+ grade (12 points) and no decay penalty produce a score of 3.0. If any input changes, the score changes too.

What this score does not measure

The formula does not model volatility, drawdown, liquidity, concentration, leverage, option strategy, distribution composition, tax treatment, NAV erosion, future distribution changes or whether differently measured total-return figures are comparable. A high score can still reflect an unusually high and unstable yield.
